Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)

Summary

This marker evaluates the genetic capacity of your gut ecosystem to synthesize Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid). This vitamin is the indispensable "raw material" with which your body and your bacteria make Coenzyme A (CoA), one of the most critical molecules for life. A high capacity for bacterial production ensures an efficient energy engine for burning fats and carbohydrates, and is vital for the repair of the intestinal wall.

Overview

The name "pantothenic" comes from the Greek pantos, meaning "from everywhere," because this vitamin is found in small amounts in almost all foods (meats, eggs, vegetables, whole grains). Your body absorbs it in the small intestine.

However, in the dense ecosystem of the colon (large intestine), pantothenic acid is an immensely valuable and highly demanded resource. Your bacteria desperately need it to build Coenzyme A (CoA). Without CoA, a cell cannot metabolize fats or extract energy from carbohydrates; literally, its metabolic engine shuts down.

Fortunately, a specific group of bacteria acts as a "primary manufacturer," producing B5 from scratch and sharing it with the rest of the ecosystem (cross-feeding). This keeps the good bacteria that don't know how to make it alive and contributes to your body's total supply, which has special transporters (SMVT) in the colon to absorb this vitamin surplus.

Health impact

The endogenous production of Vitamin B5 has a profound impact on energy metabolism and tissue repair:

  • Energy and Fat Metabolism: Vitamin B5 is the central component of the Krebs Cycle (the cellular energy engine). It is absolutely necessary to oxidize (burn) fatty acids. A chronic deficiency is clinically associated with lethargy, extreme muscle fatigue, and the sensation of "burning feet" or mild neuropathy.
  • Intestinal Mucosa Repair: B5 and Coenzyme A are necessary to synthesize complex lipids (fats) and sphingolipids, which form cell membranes. B5-producing bacteria directly nourish your colon cells, accelerating the healing of micro-ulcers and keeping the intestinal epithelium sealed and resistant.
  • Stress Regulation: The adrenal glands require enormous amounts of Vitamin B5 to synthesize steroid hormones, such as cortisol (the stress hormone). A constant supply from the microbiome supports the endocrine system during periods of prolonged chronic stress.

Technical report

The evaluation of the de novo biosynthesis of pantothenic acid is performed by Shotgun metagenomic sequencing, quantifying the global genetic potential of the metabolic pathway in the ecosystem. Our bioinformatic algorithm tracks and maps the abundance of genes that make up the pantothenate biosynthesis super-pathway, specifically looking for the potential expression of highly conserved key genes such as panB, panC, panD, and panE.

In the intestinal ecosystem, the main primary "producers" (those with the complete pathway) largely belong to the phyla Bacteroidetes (e.g., Bacteroides, Prevotella) and certain Proteobacteria. Surprisingly, many of the largest butyrate producers of the phylum Firmicutes (such as Faecalibacterium) are auxotrophs (dependent); that is, they cannot survive or produce butyrate unless neighboring bacteria supply them with sufficient B5.

High capacity suggests a highly collaborative ecosystem. It ensures the necessary substrate for short-chain fatty acid production and prevents metabolic fatigue. Conversely, low capacity may indicate dietary dependence. The ecological cross-feeding network is compromised. Good bacteria can enter metabolic "starvation," halting butyrate production. Clinical strategy requires optimizing dietary intake (egg yolks, avocado, shiitake mushrooms), considering temporary supplementation with Pantothenic Acid or Pantethine (its active form), and using complex prebiotics that stimulate the growth of the phylum Bacteroidetes.
