GOS Degradation

Summary

This marker assesses the genetic capacity of your microbiome to digest Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) and oligosaccharides from the Raffinose family. These complex carbohydrates are primarily responsible for the fermentation of legumes (lentils, chickpeas, beans). Possessing a high degradation capacity means your flora transforms legumes into potent anti-aging prebiotics without causing discomfort; a low capacity explains why a dish of lentils causes you severe gas and bloating.

Overview

Legumes are one of the healthiest and longest-living foods on the planet, but they have a problem: gas. The reason is biological: GOS and raffinose are formed by galactose molecules joined in a specific chemical way (alpha-galactosidic bonds). The human body does not produce the necessary enzyme (alpha-galactosidase) to break this bond. Therefore, these sugars pass intact through your stomach and small intestine. Upon reaching the colon, the scenario depends on your ecosystem:

  • If you have the right bacteria: Bifidobacteria are the specialists in this field. They possess the exact enzymes to "cut" these sugars cleanly and efficiently, producing a slightly acidic environment that repels pathogens and generating very little gas.
  • If you lack the right bacteria: Legumes become an uncontrolled feast for less specialized bacteria. These devour them quickly and chaotically, producing large volumes of carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and methane, inflating your intestine like a balloon.

Health impact

The efficiency with which your bacteria degrade GOS and raffinose directly impacts your diet and immunity:

  • Tolerance to Plant Protein: Legumes are the cornerstone of "plant-based" diets and the Mediterranean diet. Low bacterial capacity forces you to restrict one of the most cardioprotective food groups due to digestive intolerance.
  • The Greatest Immune Stimulus (Bifidogenic Effect): GOS are, along with breast milk, the food that most promotes the growth of Bifidobacteria. Good digestion of these compounds allows your "peace bacteria" to thrive, resulting in a better-regulated immune system and fewer allergies.
  • Prevention of IBS Symptoms: Intolerance to GOS (the "O" in FODMAP) is one of the main triggers in patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Technical report

To calculate your GOS-Raffinose Degradation Capacity, we analyze the abundance of genes encoding the enzyme alpha-galactosidase (glycoside hydrolase families GH36 and GH110). The genus Bifidobacterium is the main player here, as it possesses the most efficient genetic clusters for this metabolism, followed by certain strains of Lactobacillus and Bacteroides.

Adequate capacity indicates excellent ecological readiness for a diet based on legumes and dense vegetables. Low capacity requires culinary technical intervention: soaking legumes for more than 24 hours (discarding the water), germinating them, or consuming them mashed (like hummus or purees), as this physically pre-digests the GOS. At the supplementation level, the use of exogenous alpha-galactosidase enzyme (taken before meals) can compensate for this bacterial deficit temporarily while re-educating the gut.
